It's Friday morning and you are waking up to mostly sleet instead of snow! This was an extremely difficult forecast and a degree made all the difference between sleet and snow!
Let's explain.
Around the 850 mb level, temps were literally a degree too warm for this to be a changeover to snow! That is approximately 5,000 feet up! Temps around and just above freezing made all the difference with this! This was literally the difference between a degree. Models were too cold and the cold had a difficult time punching through. The precipitation lightening up overnight which didn't help either
This was a very difficult setup but it happens! Storms that have several different precipitation types is
when a degree makes all the difference between mixed precipitation and snow! It can go either way. Every winter we seem to get 1 storm that busts
Be careful this morning as temps are in the 20s now across northern MA into NH, VT, ME. Sleet with some mixed snow in there will make for a tricky morning commute as the roads freeze! Stay safe out there folks!
