Good morning! What a mess we have on the way! A complicated forecast with this! Mixed precipitation moves into SNE today by the afternoon and evening! Sleet will be the primary precip type with some freezing rain across the interior. The evening commute will get a bit slippery especially across the interior as that sleet moves into southern VT, NH. Widespread sleet away from much of CT, RI, SE MA by 7-10 PM tonight!
Here's the complicated part! Temps will be around 32-33 degrees with temperatures at 5,000 feet around 32-31! That sleet is going to change to snow later this evening, early FRI AM across northern MA into central New England! The question is how quick do we change over? We are only within a degree here of sleet or snow! Very tricky! I'm thinking that we will see a changeover to snow around midnight tonight with a swath of 3-5" across northern MA into southern areas of New Hampshire to about the Pittsfield area into far southern Maine. One thing that a few models have been showing is some isolated 5"+ amounts across the north shore of Massachusetts up into the Derry area. For that reason, I've added an isolated area of 5"+ but I think the max would be around 6" with this. This is a very difficult forecast as sleet may try to hang around before we flip to some snow! Boston around 3" right now is my best guess. This will be a wet snow across northern MA with temps around 33-32! 20s across NH. VT, ME just north of the Derry area. The Friday AM commute is going to be awful. The bulk of the snow moves out by 9-10 AM but scattered freezing drizzle or snow showers linger across NE MA through the afternoon and even some patchy freezing drizzle across the interior so TAKE IT SLOW and be cautious Friday with temps around 32!
